In some ways, you feel so far away from the world here. It is a many hour flight to the next country. News from around the world is sparse. We heard about the floods in England, the unending winter at home and the US, and that Venezuela and the Ukraine and Russia seem on the brink of war. Oh and the Olympics got some play here but the coverage of the Winter games was very different here. Otherwise, we don't hear a lot about the outside world.
There are some exceptions to this. Sports such as cricket, soccer, and rugby from around the world get reported. Like at home, we hear of the world's stock markets. And the entertainment industry gets a lot of press time here.
I watched some of today's Oscars. The ceremony started at 12:30pm Monday afternoon- and we had to get back into Sydney to catch tomorrow's flight to Melbourne. It was different having the Oscar's mid day. People were at work and at school and as they got on the train they were talking about who won. Since Cate Blanchett is from Melbourne, interest in the Oscars was high.
I had watched many of the winning films this year. I saw all Best Actress nominees and thought they were all wonderful. I have not seen the Dallas Buyer's Club but will do so when I get back to Canada. I did not think 12 Years a Slave was the best movie of the year- I liked American Hustle. From the bit I saw, I enjoyed Ellen's performance. And Australian interviewers did not show Rob Ford on the red carpet so I was happy.
